 Conference Statement

The Hong Kong Translation Society and the Center for Translation Studies of the Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University are delighted to announce the "Translating the Humanities and Technologizing Translation: Translation Master Lectures cum International Conference on Translation, Culture and Technology," to be held in June 16-19, 2023, at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

This international conference aims to bring together scholars, researchers, practitioners and technology service providers from around the globe to exchange new ideas and present their latest research findings in the field of translation studies.

The conference is themed on the profound impact of translation and translation technology on the promotion of literature and the arts, and the fostering of intercultural understanding and communication. It will also feature the release and demonstration of e-platforms for translation and interpreting teaching, self-learning and practice as developed by Hong Kong researchers to assist users in coping with the challenges of the AI era.

The conference will begin with the “Translation Master Lectures,” which underscore the significance of learning from the experience and wisdom of venerable masters in the field. We are honored to have luminaries of academia Prof. Leo Tak-hung Chan, Prof. Douglas Robinson, Prof. Tung Yuan-fang and Prof. Wang Kefei, incoming Honorary Fellows of the Hong Kong Translation Society, and Prof. Lynne Bowker, Prof. Haidee Kotze, Prof. Sara Laviosa and Prof. Jeremy Munday, share their insights on translation.

Submissions of abstracts for individual papers or panels related to the conference themes are welcome, covering (but not restricted to) the following topics:

  • 5. Interpreting Studies
  • 6. Audiovisual Translation
  • 7. Corpus-Based Translation Studies

After the conference, selected papers on Translation and Technology will be considered for publication as an edited anthology. Selected papers on other conference themes will be considered for publication in special issues of Translation Quarterly.
