Workshop Goals and Scope

JWLLP is a collegiate workshop for deep discussion on issues involving language and language sciences. It started out as a Japan-Korea bilateral workshop with participation rom Hong Kong and other East Asian countries more recently. The 25th version of JWLLP will be focused on a special theme, Language and Food. As Jurafsky (2014) showed in his high-impact book The Language of Food, linguistic descriptions of food are rich resources of different approaches to the study of language. The ranges of topics include but not limited to language and culture, language contact and/or variations, the influence of cultural exchanges on material culture and on conceptualization, translation, food and emotion, food and sense perception, etc. Corpus-driven computational approaches to language and food (focussing on food reviews, menus and food labels) enable exploration of linguistic issues with immediate societal impact and applications. And sensory words describing words open a window on universal vs. culturally dependent views on cognition.

We invite contributions from all subfields of linguistics and the interdisciplinary research that address issues and topics related to this special theme.
