The membership of ABC, like the field of business communication, is richly interdisciplinary, drawing members from such fields as management, marketing, English, speech communication, linguistics and information systems, etc. Our membership also encompasses communication consultants and other business practitioners. We have a strong membership base in North America, Europe, and Asia and the Pacific.

Mission

The Association for Business Communication (ABC) is an international, interdisciplinary organization committed to advancing business communication research, education, and practice.

Vision

The Association for Business Communication (ABC) seeks to become the foremost authority in the field of business communication by promoting excellence in teaching, increasing knowledge within the discipline, enriching business communication classes to better prepare students, and improving the quality of communication in the workplace. Because we recognize the importance of globalization, the Association seeks to continue to expand its international membership as well as its international point of view. To reach all members, we plan to incorporate many technologies for enhanced communication and provision of the services they most need.

The values and responsibilities of the Association are outlined in a code of professional ethics adopted in October 2005.

The priorities of the Association are detailed in the strategic plan (accessible to members only), adopted in February 2015.

Strategic Goals

ABC’s three primary goals for the next five years (2015−2020) are to

  1. Strengthen the discipline of business communication.
  2. Manage and expand our vibrant, diverse ABC community in support of our common goal: excellence in business communication research, pedagogy, and practice.
  3. Bolster ABC’s connections with workplace professionals.

香港理工大學中文及雙語學系

The Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies (CBS), formerly known as the Department of Chinese, Translation and Interpretation, was established in 1988. Our department is one of the leading academic departments in Asia that studies Chinese and its interaction with English. It addresses real life language issues in a bilingual society. As a department with two undergraduate programmes, nine taught postgraduate programme, and a programme for MPhil and PhD students, CBS has worked hard to become an innovative pioneer in establishing academic programmes that are underpinned by our research and which fulfill the demands of society. We established the first MA in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language in Hong Kong as well as the first Master of Speech Therapy in Hong Kong.

As an active, research-oriented department, CBS has been strong in the research areas of bilingual communication, Chinese language education, Chinese language testing, language disorder, language technology, linguistics and translation.

As a responsible member of the community, CBS constantly provides services to the people of Hong Kong, especially to those in need. For example, we have special programmes that help South Asian school children in Hong Kong to learn Chinese, we offer Chinese and Putonghua tests for local primary and secondary school students, and we provide therapy services to children with communication disorders or learning deficiencies.

CBS has five professional units. Each unit has its unique expertise and functions to support one or more of the department’s research focuses and strengths.

  1. Centre for Translation Studies
  2. Chinese Language Centre (CLC)
  3. The Hong Kong Chapter Corporate Communication International
  4. The HK PolyU-PekingU Research Centre on Chinese Linguistics
  5. Speech Therapy Unit (STU)

Mission Statement

  1. To offer high quality programmes that produce graduates with international vision and advanced biliterate and multilingual skills;
  2. To conduct applied research that contributes to the study of Chinese in a bilingual context as well as bilingualism in a Chinese context, incorporating modern views and methods in disciplines related to such study;
  3. To provide professional services to the community relevant to the needs of Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland and other countries through engagement in consultancy projects and other forms of service.
