What is Work-Integrated Education (WIE)?

Work-Integrated Education (WIE) aims to enhance students' professional competencies and all-roundedness during their training in the workplace. WIE subject carries 3 training credits and all undergraduate students are required to complete 160 hours of placement in order to earn the credits.

This year, students can earn WIE credits by participating in one of the following three types of placements:

a) Overseas Placements organized by Departments:

For examples, Warwick University Placement Programme, Tsinghua University English Summer Camp, etc.

b) Local Placements organized by Departments

You may click here for Job Listing

c) Preferred Graduate Development Programme (PGDP) organized by Student Affairs Office (SAO):

Interested students should visit PGDP's website at http://www.polyu.edu.hk/sao/pgdp/ and submit applications directly to SAO.

However, if a student would like to have his/her PGDP placement endorsed as a WIE placement and covered by PolyU's Group Personal Accident Insurance for WIE Activities, the student is required to report to the WIE Officer of Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies, two weeks before the commencement of the placement. Late reporting will render the student ineligible for the GPA insurance.

d) Individual Placements

Students may apply to the WIE Officer to have their individually acquired part-time/full-time/summer jobs endorsed as Individual Placements (IP). To allow for the self-acquired job to be endorsed as an IP, it is the student's responsibility to prove that that the job will allow the student to exercise their professional knowledge and/or to meaningfully develop their personal generic skills in the workplace environment.
Application form for Conversion of Individual Placement

Please note that, for monitoring and supporting purposes, unannounced site visits by WIE Officer will be made during the student's WIE placement period, and, when necessary, individual interview sessions may be arranged with the student or the host organization to collect relevant information.

In addition to paid, and meaningful, jobs, volunteer community services, including the Community Service Learning Programme (CSLP) operated by SAO, and campus employment through Education through Campus Work (ETCW) or through direct employment with a PolyU academic department or administrative office can, in principle, also be recognised as Individual Placements. However, the student concerned is required to file an application to the WIE Officer at least two weeks before the commencement of placement, following the same application procedure described above, in order for the position to be endorsed as an Individual Placement.

Assessment

In order for your placement to be endorsed for WIE training credits, you are expected to meet the following assessment requirements:
  1. Your placement organization should complete an appraisal form based on your work performance. You can bring the form to your Workplace Supervisor yourself. A positive rating in the form is crucial for you to successfully pass the WIE assessment. The form should be mailed directly back to Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies from your placement organization.
  2. You are required to maintain a reflective journal on a regular basis, i.e., at least once a week.
  3. Within one month after the completion of your placement, you are required to submit a Final Report to the WIE Coordinator. The report should contain:
    • A brief description of the company/organization you have worked in;
    • Your original expectations and objectives for this placement;
    • A description of your responsibilities and work at the placement organization;
    • A post-placement self-evaluation;
    • A personal development plan based on your self-evaluation; and
    • The reflective journal (as an appendix).
    The report will be evaluated by the WIE Coordinator.
  4. The total length of the Final Report, including the reflective journal, should be 10-20 A4 pages, single-spaced, excluding tables, graphics or photos.

Announcement of WIE Results

Students are reminded that the registration for the WIE subject and the announcement of the subject result will only be made in the following semester after their timely submission of the Final Report. To achieve this purpose, students who submit their Final Reports after the class-ending day in each semester and summer term will not see their WIE results recorded in the transcript in the following semester.

Students are highly recommended to complete their WIE credits during their second year of study to guarantee successful endorsement of WIE training credits before their graduation. However, they may consider to start WIE as early as possible, say, during their first year's study.
