What is Work-Integrated Education (WIE)?

To develop students' all-roundedness and academic excellence in a professional context, PolyU has introduced the Work-Integrated Education (WIE) as one of the graduation requirements for all full-time undergraduate students from the 2005/06 cohort of intakes. WIE is an internship component through which students are expected to enhance their professional competencies and all-roundedness in a workplace environment.

Our objectives of WIE are to enable students to:
  • apply knowledge and skills learned to real work
  • have a better understanding of the workplace ethos
  • appreciate the role of language in professional workplaces
  • enhance their generic skills and nurture their personal development
  • identify their career interests and prepare for future employment

Characteristics of WIE

Number of placement hours: minimum 160
Allowance: depends on employers (employers are encouraged to provide travel and meal allowances)

Abilities of Our Students

BALSP* is a three-year full-time degree course jointly offered by the Departments of CBS and ENGL. The programme aims to produce graduates with a high level of competence in English and Chinese, a sound understanding of the theoretical disciplines underlying language studies and the integrated use of the languages concerned. Our energetic and highly motivated students can contribute the following to your company:
  • information/document processing that requires proficient language skills in both English and Chinese (including both Cantonese and Putonghua)
  • translation of documents between English and Chinese
  • knowledge of contemporary written and spoken languages used in professional contexts
  • ability to think critically and creatively with regard to language and communication

As a placement-provider, your company can:
  • get access to a fresh professional and enthusiastic workforce
  • select potential qualified staff in advance

Role of Employers

To maximize students' interests throughout the placement, employers are expected to:
  • provide guidance and work supervision to students to help them adapt to and learn from the workplace environment
