• Research Postgraduate Studies (MPhil & PhD)

    CBS offers supervision for the degrees of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or Master of Philosophy (MPhil) by research. The major research areas are: applied Chinese studies, bilingual communication and education, Chinese linguistics, and translation studies. Research students pursue a specific aspect of a subject in depth under the supervision of an academic staff with similar research interests.

  • MA Scheme in Chinese, Linguistics and Translation (MASCLT)

    The MA Scheme consists of five MA programmes. Each programme has its own curriculum and handles its own admissions.
    • MA in Chinese Linguistics (MACL)

      This is an advanced programme of intellectual training in modern Chinese linguistics that is geared to Hong Kong society with relevance to various professions. This programme aims to convey a rigorous body of up-to-date knowledge and to link this knowledge to the language situation of present-day Hong Kong, Greater China, and the whole world. More specifically, the programme aims to facilitate linguistic insights related especially to issues in connection with the use of Chinese in Hong Kong and other Chinese communities, to sensitize students to some theoretical implications of practical linguistic problems faced by professional users of Chinese, and to enhance their abilities to approach and solve such language-related problems in a principled way, with expert knowledge.

    • MA/PgD in Chinese Language and Literature (MACLL/PgDCLL)

      This programme helps students to acquire basic knowledge of Chinese language, Chinese literature and Chinese culture, and the skills that are necessary for teaching Chinese and to apply what they have learned to their work.

    • MA in Translating and Interpreting (MATI)

      This programme is designed for students who have some experience of or a keen interest in translating and interpreting. This programme prepared students to solve "real-world" translation and interpreting problems. It is taught by highly committed teaching staff, with both academic and professional experience.

    • MA in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (MATCFL)

      This is a unique, innovative postgraduate programme in Hong Kong to professionalize in teaching Chinese to foreigners. We emphasize contrasting oriental and western cultures, values and languages. We offer a solid foundation of courses enabling future educators to excel in all corners of the world, when they bring Chinese language to all the nations. Students are encouraged to diversify according to their particular interests in intercultural communication and well marketable applied areas, while they also have the opportunity to be personally guided by the best experts in the area, if they opt for a research career.

    • MA in Japanese Studies for the Professions (MAJSP)

      This programme helps students acquire the required Japan-literacy that enables them to work in Japan-related multilingual work places. Both knowledge of current Japanese society and culture, and practical communication skills are taught. Graduate are expected to be the core members of Japanese studies and Japan related social activities in Hong Kong.
