  • Programme Aims:

    The aim of the MA Scheme in Chinese, Linguistics and Translation is to develop the intellectual, critical and imaginative abilities of students in relation to a particular body of subject matters. It is conceived and designed as an advanced course of intellectual training in modern linguistics, Chinese and translation, geared to Hong Kong society with relevance to various professions. It helps the students to learn the basic knowledge necessary for these professions and the ways to apply the knowledge to their work.

    The objectives of the MASCLT are -
    to equip participants with the following academic and professional knowledge:
    • familiarity with the core concepts and the major theories in the study of Chinese language, linguistics and translation that will be relevant to their current and future career;
    • consolidation of knowledge gained through execution of research in Chinese language, linguistics and translation that is involved in Hong Kong society;
    • analytical awareness of the language situation in Hong Kong and the interplay of various language forms in Hong Kong; and
    • essential know-how of up-to-date information technology related to languages and language use.
  • Programme Outcomes:

    The outcomes of the MASCLT are for the students to have the following professional skills and attributes of all-roundedness:
    • the ability to make accurate generalizations from complicated natural language data;
    • the ability to utilize language intuition and make judgment with regard to issues related to languages;
    • the ability to extract, assimilate, analyze, and evaluate key information from the academic and professional literature;
    • the ability to present complex ideas logically, clearly and articulately in appropriate forms;
    • the ability to assess and interpret different layers of meaning in various types of genres and registers; and
    • the ability to use language precisely and articulately in appropriate forms.
