Non-UGC Funded Programme
BA (Hons) in Bilingual Studies 72416 (2014/15 or after)


Programme Aims:

The overall aim of the programme is to build on the abilities of graduates from related AD and HD programmes, producing knowledgeable Chinese-English bilinguals with a broad linguistic base who can approach language and culture issues intellectually and contribute/apply their expertise to the development of bilingual studies and related professions in Hong Kong and other bilingual cosmopolitan Chinese communities.


Programme Outcomes:

In the realm of knowledge and competencies for the academic discipline and the profession, graduates from the programme are expected to:

  1. have a cultivated understanding of the academic disciplines that form the knowledge foundation for a career closely related to bilingual studies;
  2. have a broad linguistic base that forms the skills foundation for a career closely related to bilingual studies;
  3. be equipped with sound knowledge of Chinese and English;
  4. be equipped with good command of Chinese (including Cantonese) and English;
  5. be able to analyze and solve problems relating to bilingual studies; and
  6. be able to exercise critical thinking.

In the realm of attributes for all-roundedness, graduates from the programme are expected to:

  1. have a cultural awareness that can serve as the basis for career development;
  2. 8. be able to cope with realistic demands made by society and the professional world.


Programme Characteristics:

This programme capitalizes on students' previous training in English and Chinese (including Cantonese) up to the Associate Degree or Higher Diploma level (or the equivalent). A salient characteristic of the programme is its integrated training, study and use of English and Chinese (including Cantonese), made possible by the unique expertise of the host department.

This programme is offered by the Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies (CBS) of Faculty of Humanities (FH) through PolyU's School of Professional Education and Executive Development (SPEED). Upon successful completion of the programme, students will be granted an academic award of PolyU proper.

Scholarship: CBS Prize for Distinguished Undergraduate Students shall be awarded to students with outstanding academic results on graduation.

Financial Assistance:Local students of BABS are eligible to apply for the Government's Non-means Tested Loan Scheme for Post-secondary Students (NLSPS) and/ or the Government's Financial Assistance Scheme for Post-secondary Students (FASP).
