UGC Funded Programme
2-year BA (Hons) in Language and Speech Sciences [BALSS]


Programme Aims:

BA(Hons) in Language and Speech Sciences (BALSS) is a UGC-funded, interdisciplinary two-year full-time honours top-up programme that admits in Senior Year students holding an Associate Degree or Higher Diploma qualification.

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has always been providing application-oriented education that stays close to the practical needs of our community and has a leading role in educating language professionals and allied health professionals. The University has also been providing language related service to the HKSAR government and the Hong Kong community, as well as running a wide range of healthcare clinics open to the public.

There is a strong demand for graduates rigorously trained in linguistic sciences and equipped with knowledge and skills in treating communication disorders in Hong Kong across the social welfare, education, healthcare and private sectors.

The programme aims to equip graduates with (1) good foundation knowledge to understand human communication and its disorders, including (a) linguistic knowledge, (b) cognitive theories and (c) biological basis; (2) knowledge and basic skills in analysing human communication disorders; (3) good communication skills to interact with people from various social and cultural backgrounds as well as individuals with communication disorders; and (4) functional work-related skills nurture students as all-round individuals who are ready to work in numerous allied health and/or educational settings, research fields and other business and industry sectors.


Intended Learning Outcomes:

PolyU aspires to develop its students as all-rounded graduates with professional competence, and has identified a set of highly valued graduate attributes as the learning goals for students.

Category A:  Institutional Learning Outcomes

The graduates of the programme will become

  1. Competent professionals able to integrate and apply in practice the fundamental knowledge and skills required for functioning effectively at the entry-level
  2. Critical thinkers able to examine and critique the validity of information, arguments, and different viewpoints, and reach a sound judgment on the basis of credible evidence and logical reasoning
  3. Effective communicators able to comprehend and communicate effectively in English and Chinese, orally and in writing, in professional and daily contexts
  4. Innovative problem solvers able to identify and define problems in professional and daily contexts, and produce creative and workable solutions to the problems
  5. Lifelong learners recognizing the need for continual learning and self-development, and be able to plan, manage and improve their own learning in pursuit of self-determined development goals
  6. Ethical leaders prepared to lead a team, responsible as professionals and citizens to the society and their own nation, and able to demonstrate ethical reasoning in professional and daily contexts.

Category B: Programme Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the programme, graduates will have:

  1. The fundamental academic knowledge
  • about the principles governing the internal structures of languages and the conventions underlying human communication;
  • about the biological build-up and function of relevant parts of the human body, as well as the neurological functions relevant to language
  • about cognition involved in language reception, perception, processing and production and the psychologic process in language use
  • and about the biological, cognitive and psychological substrates of communication disorders
  1. The basic skills
  • of helping assessing communication disorders and aiding therapeutic processes for communication disorders
  • of analyzing speech and language data related to communication disorders
  • of communicating with people with various social, cultural and economic status, as well as people with various communication difficulties
  • and of arranging different tasks and arranging work according to schedules
  1. The essential working ethics
  • on academic integrity
  • and on handling private information and dealing with clients
